PUNTA CASTAGNA
Difficulty: Demanding
Max depth (advised) 40mt.
Very fascinating dive, the slope is made of a series of white pomice canyons that extend into the abyss and make out an interesting and particular atmosphere with contrasting colours. We dock on a 9 metres sea floor, starting there the dive, to then aim for the descending slope wich offers beautiful tube worms which almost seem to indicate the way down. Beautiful red octacorals (Gorgonaceae) wait for us at 36 metres surrounded by clouds of anthias. Frequent are also encounters with morays, big octopus, lobsters, groupers and shoals of barracudas.

This dive adapts perfectly around everybody, from the less to the more experienced diver, offering a moltitude of colors and marine life. Once docked in the little bay under the ex french village, we can easily descend on a 6 metres sandy bottom and from there start our gradual descent. The dive consists in following a series of submerged rocks which form beautyfull walls on their other side. These walls and cracks are bombarded with colorful benthic life. Numerous sponges , tubeworms and starfish colour the walls while octopus, groupers and morays spy on us from their hides. Sometime is possible to encounter shoals of seabass and barracudas. Moreover, once arrived at maximum depth, we can admire beautyful noble pen shells.

We dock on a rocky bottom of about 5 metres. Once underwater, we will head to open water, head towards two aligned rocks which indicate, once passed, the way towards a massive rock, coming up from 17 metres to 5 metres below surface. Before starting our exploration, we’ll descend few more metres to arrive on the other side of the rock where we’ll find a small cave inhabited by colourful parapandalus prawns and abundant noble pen shells outside it. From here we will dive around the rock looking for small groupers, morays and octopus. Numerous starfish and nudibranchs will frame the dive. If done at night this dives becomes even more interesting due to the massive presence of alicia mirabilis that once lightened by our torches will show their full beauty.

PIETRA MENALDA

Once arrived at the small pinnacle, we’ll dock on a 12 metres rocky floor, descend there and continue for the bottom of the pinnacle sitting under 32 metres of sea water. Practically we will circle the pinnacle, keeping it all the way on our right side. Right at the beginning we will spot some big groupers that watch us from their hides. Continuing on our tour we’ll also circle a small pinnacle edging from the main one with its top found at 16 metres where shoals of barracuda can be observed most times in great numbers. White seabreams, common dentex, together with big groupers and morays take refuge under the moltitude of rocks and inside cracks. Coming back up and towards our security stop at 5 metres we will be accompanied by a vast number of parazoanthos, astroides, sea urchins and parrot fish.

LA SECCA DELLE FORMICHE
Difficulty: Medium
Max depth 30mt.
Not far from the Ants of Lipari, we can spot another dive site. A rocky formation resembling an upside down cone that rises from a sandy bottom of about 30 metres to 11 metres under the surface. We dock on the top of the rock, highly visible from the surface due to cristalline water. We start from the bottom and start to dive around the formation. Numerous are the starfish and the sponges that colour the wall, while morays, groupers, parrot fish and seabreams will accompany us throught the dive.

LA PIETRA DEL BAGNO
Difficulty: Demanding
Max depth 36mt.
Once arrived on this big rock that rises to the surface we need to dock on the south side, where the sea floor is shallow enough, at about 14 metres. We start our descent and immediately reach the max depth of 36 metres and from here we start the circumnavigation keeping the formationon our left. The base of the formation is characterised from big stones almost of cubic shape laying on one another, decorated by big tube worms, starfish, sponges, crinoids and red octacorals. This is the best habitat for groupers... waiting shy in their hides we may spot lobsters and crabs, octopus and morays. Not rarely is possible to see big pelagics such as seabass.
